British Antiquarian and Archaeological Archives at the Ashmolean Museum:

Consulting the Archives

Researchers wishing to consult material from the Department of Antiquities Archives should contact the Departmental Administrator to make an appointment well in advance of a proposed visit. They should specify details about the material that they wish to consult and how it relates to their research. They should also suggest 2-3 possible dates for their visit. People who are not known to the Department should provide a reference or academic address.

  • email: antiquities@ashmus.ox.ac.uk
  • post: Administrator, Department of Antiquities, Ashmolean Museum, Oxford OX1 2PH
  • It is not possible to make an appointment by telephone.

Please be aware that it can take up to a month to arrange for material to be brought to the Study Room from the off-site store. At present, visitors are asked to book appointments a minimum of four to six weeks in advance.

Archive material is consulted in the Antiquities Study Room, which is open Tuesday - Friday 10:00-13:00 and 14:00-16:30 when the museum is open. Further information about making bookings in the Antiquities Study Room is available on the museum website.

Visitors consulting archives must comply with the rules of the Antiquities Study Room (view pdf document).

There are additional requirements for consulting archives (view pdf document).

Please note that it is not possible to grant access to uncatalogued archives.
