This is the pilot's log book for George Allen. The first entry is for May 1929 and in the remarks field is 'dual' which is probably when he is training in a Gypsy Moth DH 60 - registration G-EBOT. The co-pilots are Shelford and Mickelmore. By the second page of the log he is flying solo and dual, after only 9 hours in the air. In April 1931 he purchases his own de Haviland Gypsy Moth - registration G-ABKD, called Maid of the Mist. He takes passengers and one particular entry for 26th September 1929 says 'Phebe' (his sister). Another entry on 15 March 1930 says 'A. Anderson' (the Works manager, no relation). As well as all the British flights he has ventured abroad and in August 1930 he flies from Lympne to Brussels, then Brussels to Antwerp and Amsterdam; with 'forced landings'. The entry for 26th March 1931 states 'JJ total 200.35'; this is the total hours he flew in the other Gypsy Moth G-AAJJ. The next entry for 4th April shows he is flying his own, newly purchased, Gypsy Moth G-ABKD. In September 1931 he is again flying to Brussels, Germany and Ostend. Interesting entries are for July 1930 when he flies to Blackpool, then the next day to Comber, Northern Ireland. It is known he had family there. In August 1932 he flies again to Ireland, possibly taking Phebe with him (entry says PA). The log finishes abruptly in August 1939 when Allen gifted the The Maid of the Mist to the Royal Air Force Service. |
