Aerial Photographs - Major G.W.G. Allen

Major George Allen (1891-1940) was one of the first people in Oxfordshire to own an aeroplane - a De Haviland Puss Moth, named 'Maid of the Mist'. He flew extensively across Southern Engand, and other areas, taking aerial photographs from 1933 until 1939.

Many of these photographs are of archaeological sites but he also took photographs of towns and cities, racing circuits, gravel pits and cloud formations.

The Ashmolean Museum has a collection of around 2000 photographs taken by Allen and bequeathed to the museum after his death.
